This 3-point course is in the first year of Master and is a part of "Advanced Computer Aided Modeling and Visualization". (The other part is CAD)

The CAID program used is Autodesk Alias Automotive on Windows based workstations.

Goal and contents

Students are given training in CAID on a deeper level in order to be able to create advanced 3D models and make effective visualizations.

The aim is to give a more in depth knowledge of the tools in a CAID program.

 

Concepts covered

Understand the different modeling strategies available to maximize modeling efficiency.
Determine the softwares role in the design workflow.
Customize construction tolerances and linear units.
Construct efficient curves with optimal parameterization and minimal geometry
Define G0, G1, and G2 continuity and the importance of each to curve and surface construction
Manipulate curves using the tools found in the curve edit palette
Understand the criteria for primary and transitional surfaces
Construct primary surfaces using the set planar, revolve, skin, extrude and monorail surfacing tools

Construct transitional surfaces using birail, square, fillet and round
Understand when and where the options related to continuity and rebuilding of surfaces should be applied
Edit surfaces using freeform CV pulling and precise manipulation methods

Evaluate curves and surfaces to ensure desired curvature and continuity characteristics.  Create stitched models for Boolean operations or output to solid modeling packages

Understand the process of data transfer as it relates to their designs to other CAD systems. An overview of the merits and limitations of various file transfer formats (i.e.: IGES, STEP etc.), tips and traps will be provided
Prepare models for successful rapid prototyping output

Areas covered:

  • NURBS modeling with G2 continuity
  • Milling 3-axis and 5-axis principles
  • Practise secveral 3D-scanning methods
  • Export succesful Rapid Prototyping files
  • Use different mesh and polygon tools for repair and mixing
  • Some advanced techniqes for Rendering. Glow, Render passes

Prerequisites

Completion of CAID 1

Essential Digital Platforms

In the schools PC-labs:

  • All necessary software is already installed

On your PRIVATE computer follow the installation:

  • guides for Zoom
  • for VPN-access to the school resources as file server and license servers
  • guide for Alias
  • guide for VRed (an alternative is installing KeyShot, go here)
  • Web Cam is valuable to have
  • working microphone  :)
  • stable internet connection. If possible, use an ethernet cable and not wifi.

Form of tuition

Tuition is in the form of lectures and practical training under the supervision of tutor. In computer labs and through Zoom, exercises will be carried out under the guidance of an authorized teacher. All sections in the course are obligatory. The course material could be found through this web page and on our school file server or a Google Drive share, see links below.

Examination form and marks

Examination is in the form of individual practical tests and presentation of results of the given exercises at the school.

In order to obtain credit for the 3-points course, all sections and assignments must be successfully completed. Students receive a mark of either Pass or Fail for each assignment and section. For those students who do not receive a mark of pass, another opportunity is provided to pass the assignment or examination after a period of time.

Assignment #5

Combine NURBS and polygon models for 3D-printing

Export a Rapid Prototyping  (stl)    file(s). Renderings and pictures from  NetFabb basic  (free) showing;

Tasks. Compulsory

  1. Part1: Scan an object or person (polygons, mesh).Real life scanned data has to be used.
    Use Laser scanner,     Laser scanning
    IPad-scanner or        "IPad-scanning", structured light
    Photogrammetry.       Comparasion of photogrammetry softwares
  2. Part2: Add your own NURBS object use Alias (NURBS surfaces)
  3. Part3: Download and add a Solid model, Surface models or polygon model is ok. Clean it and make it leakage free.

UNION the three different parts into a 3D-printable file. ONE volume  :)

  • Correct size. Able to fit into the machine. (Usually smaller than 300mm)
  • Use Boolean action UNION
    Check with the "X-ray shader" if there is any internal volumes. It should only be ONE volume!
  • Check for holes and gaps. Meshmixer > Analyze > Inspector
  • Enough strength! Walls has to be from 0.3 to 3 mm depending on machine and material
  • The  Normals  has to be correct
  • If the model looks  rough  then you might like to add more polygons. If you have to many polygons then reduce  the number of polygons.
  • Export a STL-file (choose binary because it will be smaller)
  • Check the file size! If above 20mb then Meshmixer > Select. Ctrl-a. Select > Edit > Reduce. Max Deviation, Shape preserving

Render using VRed Render Passes and Photoshop

 

Tasks. Compulsory

The image quality, number of pixels, is not important.

The workflow, using render passes, with Photoshop  is important.

  1. Render Passes:

    Compose  these passes, and use them for post adjustments, in Photoshop

  6. Render a Depth-pass as a High Dynamic Range (HDR) file in the EXR file format. This makes it easy to set Depth O Field (DOF) blur in Photoshop
