Motorcycle Fairing

Download Hi-res images from our school server:

1. Make a  Alias Project folder with a  Pix and  wire sub folder

2. Click these images and download high resolution pics into the Pix folder

Main Body Curves

1. Build the basic Side profile curves with BLEND CURVES using the orthographic drawings

2. Look at the CV-layout

2. Look and analyze the Curvature "Fence"

3. Adjust with the edit BLEND point tool and maybe also move CV:s directly (the Blend curve will "die", which is ok)

4. Make side curves. You must consider the continuity for the curves, especially the side curves to ensure proper mirroring of the finished halves.


Help Surfaces

1. To ensure continuity at the axis of symmetry.  Make some thin help surfaces by copying and moving the curves

2. Stretch a skin between the curves

Main Body Surface

3. Build the main surface with BiRail. Choose TANGENT continuity  along the axis of symmetry. It gives you curvature automatically at the symmetry plane.

Question: Is it possible other methods to ensure the center continuity? :)

4. Turn on the Layer Symmetry and ensure that you have achived curvature continuity on the top and also underneath the main body!

The Upper Surface

1. Trace the upper siluette of the fuel tank with a BLEND CURVE

2. Carefully make this cross section curve from the top silluette curve down to the main body. Hint: Do not attach it in the recess area (the bump)

3. Use tangent continuity in the top

4. Use curvature continuity where it attaches to the main body


Then build the fuel tank using one or more surfaces so that they are continuos with each other as well the main birail surface and axis of symmetry as required. Check the continuity with appropriate tool when the tank is constructed.


Recess and flared Surface

Add details to the motorcycle fairing in the same way. Start by adding a flared surface on the lower part and a recess surface on the upper part.


Air Intake

Then build the air intake. Start by building the small surface for the air intake by duplicating isoparams from the main surface and using the square tool. Pull the end CVs slightly of the surface inwards but maintain curvature continuity at the start of the air intake. Is it possible other methods available?

Add curves on surfaces to both the main and air intake surfaces. These will be the edges for the recess surface.

Add profile curves that makes contact with the curves on surface with the appropriate continuity. Then use these to build the connectig surfaces (square or birail). Is it possible other methods available?
