Students win three categories at IXDA 2013

Four students from Umeå Institute of Designs two MA programmes Interaction Design and Advanced Product Design were acknowledged with three wins at IXDAs Interaction Awards 2013 in Toronto for their 100 BPM concept.
Two PhD positions in Design

Our research program "Prototyping Practices" is investigating and inventing the future of our professions. The central idea in the research program is that design research does not only develop methods, theories, etc. for creating products, services or systems, but that it, as a response to changing foundational conditions and possibilities for design, also need to develop holistic ways of prototyping new design practices. Much like how design makes use of prototypes also in early stages of a development process to visualise and communicate ideas and issues, the basic idea here is that we can also 'prototype practices' to experiment and explore the implications of social, cultural and technological changes and challenges to design. As part of this program, we initiate three parallel but interconnected themes: "Design and Social Innovation", "Design as a Critical Practice" and "The Work of Design after the Age of Mass-Production".

Red dot institute chooses UID as the best design education

Red dot institute has chosen Umeå Institute of Design as the best design education in Europe and the Americas. The prestigious ranking promotes design institutions in the frontline and is based on design awards won during the last five years.
Red Dot ranks UID no.1 - Four new Awards

From a total of 3.672 entries from 56 countries, submitted to 21 different categories, seven MA students from the Umeå Institute of Designs two MA programmes Advanced Product Design and Interaction Design were among the design talents who were acknowledged with a total of four awards in Red Dot’s Design Concepts category 2012.

Alastair Warren, a student at the Masters programme of Advanced Product Design at UID, won Gold with his Breathe.Easy concept in the student category of the Best Design Awards, arranged by The Designers Institute of New Zealand.
Eric Leong wins Interior Motives Award 2012

Eric Leong, recent UID graduate from the Transportation Design Programme, won this year's "Best Production Interior" category at the 10th Interior Motives Student Awards. The announcement was made in France, in combination to the 2012 Paris Motorshow.

UID student wins Core77 Design Award

Maxime Dubreucq (France), a student at the Masters programme of Advanced Product Design (APD) was awarded in the 2012 edition of the Core77 Design Awards and the Spark:Concept category with a Gold award. Maxime won the awards for his concept for a new type of personal and ergonomic head protection for miners.
UID student wins New Zealand’s James Dyson Award

Nick Ross (New Zealand) from the Masters programme of Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design, won the 2012 New Zealand edition of the James Dyson Award with his MA degree project Axolotl – A Selective Bio-Harvester.

In the exhibition What if … we want to show how the design process can be used to identify and solve problems in new and creative ways. Our students have, in close collaboration with companies and organizations, explored how design can be used to think in new ways in different contexts.

Marije de Haas Is a Holland-born communications designer – BA, MA in Communication Design, and one of the six who formed design studio Bullet in London. Now she is Sweden based, since she and her family moved to Floda, which is located outside Botsmark. Which is located outside Umeå. Let´s just say it´s a very, very small village in northern Sweden. We met her at UID and had a chat.

UID master students win iF concept awards 2012

From more than 10.566 valid entries submitted by design students from all over the world, only 100 projects received an iF concept award 2012. Two of these were awarded to Masters students at Umeå Institute of Design (UID): Simon Fredriksson and Gosha Galitsky, Dogan Sekercioglu, all students at the Masters programme of Advanced Product Design (APD) and Carol Tang from UIDs Interaction Design programme.

Little easter witches payed a visit

A building made of bottles

Rodrigo García Gonzalez, student at Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå University, receives first prize in the European student competetion in sustainable architecture, Gau:di. The winning concept is a market hall made out of empty plastic bottles and paper. It will be constructed in full scale as a 1:1 prototype and presented at the opening of the Biennale of Architecture in Venice, Italy on August 28.

Designing Haptics Studio at TEI 2012
