Cella: Bringing Distributed Families Together

Internet Communication Technologies have vastly improved the speed and form in which people communicate across long distances; allowing them to maintain relationship continuity. Nonetheless, the available mediums are generally not designed for the specific needs of a distributed family. Families have to utilise and adapt in order to recreate togetherness. This project explores how we might design for connecting families. It proposes a concept, Cella, which aims to facilitate togetherness-oriented communication by enabling for easily establishing contact, sharing presence from a distance, communicating collectively and asynchronously.

Cella is a permanent, dedicated family device that lives in the home. It's mission is to connect family members to each other, with a direct, uncluttered line of communication that is easily accessible: almost as if they were in the same home.
