Exercise today is only becoming more and more popular and the gym is one of the places that is growing the most. However, this places high demands on the hygiene and sanitation of those staying at these facilities; something that often turns out to be flawed when you look a little more carefully.
Today 73% of all surfaces on gym equipment contains flu-viruses and in many cases gyms has more infection than other public settings. The difference is that at the gym people interact with a lot more surfaces than other public settings which increases chances of getting infected.
This project shows the thought process from idea to finished concept for a product that is intended to reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses in public gyms.
The result is a small compact UV-lamp that can be mounted in different places in the gym and with the help of far UV-C light reduce the amount of bacteria and viruses in a safe and sustainable way. The product also aims to make it easier for those who train at the gym and remove the responsibility to clean from the customers and instead create an automated solution that allows the gym members to focus on their own.
The lamp is designed to blend into the gym and not draw too much attention from other design elements such as gym equipment and such.
