skype: estolter

I am originally from Umeå where I did my undergraduate and PhD studies in Informatics with a focus on information systems design and interaction design. I worked as a professor at the Department of Informatics for many years before I moved to the School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, in 2005. During my time in Bloomington I have kept my engagement with Umeå as a professor at the Institute of Design. I have family and friends in Umeå and usually visit  a few times per year.

What I do at UID

I am involved in the doctoral education and research at UID. I advise a number of PhD students and I am engaged in the planning and discussions about research initiatives.

My main work is within interaction design, philosophy and theory of design, information technology and society, information systems design, and philosophy of technology. Since I have been in the field for quite some time, I have been able to publish a number of articles and five books, including "Thoughtful Interaction Design" (MIT Press) and "The Design Way" (MIT Press).
